Envisioning a bright new year

As another year comes to a close, people often use this as a time of reflection. We look back on the things we’ve learned and experienced from the past, and hope to use those lessons to grow in the coming new year. Some people like to dive headfirst into the “new year, new me” motto, while others choose to focus on more specific areas of their lives. Regardless, the symbolism of a fresh year can be motivational for many to begin planning and envisioning their goals for the new chapter.
A creative twist to this planning is vision boarding. In recent years, creating a vision board has grown in popularity as an artistic approach to goal planning and visualizing one’s hopes for the future.
What is a vision board?
Typically, a vision board is a collage of images, drawings, quotes, and other visual materials that represent goals and aspirations someone hopes to achieve. They can be made out of cut-up magazines, paper, stickers, photos, and more, and are usually arranged on some form of “board” or paper to create the collage and allow the creator to uniquely curate their vision for their future.

How are they helpful?
This art practice serves as a way to envision the future in an optimistic and hopeful light. Vision boarding can help us see what we want in a more clear and comprehensible way, while bringing self awareness to what we’re doing to reach these goals. By connecting with our aspirations and bringing them to life in a physical form, this allows for envisioning the future with a positive outlook and taking on opportunities that arise that’ll help us work towards our achievements.
Tips and tricks.
What matters to you?
Take your time to learn your interests and what you desire. What areas of life do you want to grow in? What skills do you want to learn? What hobbies interest you? It’s good to check-in with yourself and conceptualize your goals that align with your values and what you enjoy.
Prioritize.
Taking on a lot of life changes all at once can be overwhelming. When crafting your vision board, make sure to narrow down the ideas you’ve brainstormed and select a few that you’d like to invest most in. This allows for more of your time and attention to go towards each of your goals and more likely to create sustainable change throughout the year.
Get creative!
Your vision board is yours. You can add as many photos, quotes, drawings or magazine cut-outs as you’d like. It doesn’t have to look perfect, it can be as messy or pristine as you’d like. You get to build your goals and aspirations, the board serves as an expressive outlet, so make it with your own style and flair.
