Career Counseling: Frequently Asked Questions
What is Career Counseling and how does it work?
At Your Path Counseling Center, we view career counseling as a critical dimension of mental wellness. It is not just about finding a job or writing a resume; it is a holistic process that looks at your entire life. We help you explore how your personality, values, family background, and mental health influence your career choices. Our goal is to help you find and build a career that supports your mental health.
How is Career Counseling different from Career Coaching?
This is a common question. While both can help you professionally, the focus is different:
-
Career Counseling (Therapy focus): We focus on the “whole person.” We address internal hurdles like anxiety, low self-efficacy (confidence), burnout, or deep-seated uncertainty about your identity. It is best for individuals who feel “stuck” or are struggling to understand why they are unhappy in their career.
-
Career Coaching (Strategy focus): This is action-oriented and future-focused. If you are mentally ready to advance and need a strategic partner to help you hit specific metrics, improve leadership skills, or navigate corporate politics career coaching can provide the accountability and thought partnership you need.
I feel paralyzed when trying to make career decisions. Is this normal?
Absolutely. Fear, anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges often are barrier to career success. We use techniques specifically designed to help you understand why you feel paralyzed, along with guiding you to build the skills you need to move forward.
Do you use assessments?
Yes. We use frameworks, such as The Career Personality Profiler, to help you understand which career types could be right for you. However, we do not just hand you a test result. We work with you to interpret how those results align with your current life stage and personal goals.
I am thinking about a complete career pivot. Can you help with that?
Yes. Sometimes clients we work with discover that changing the company they work for, or even the industry they work in is necessary for them to achieve their professional goals. We can help you conduct a “skills audit” to identify transferable strengths you already possess (like adaptability or problem-solving) that can apply to entirely new industries. We also support you through the emotional transition of leaving the comfort and familiarity of your current career.
Who is this service for?
We work with clients at all stages of life, including:
-
Professionals facing burnout or value conflicts in their current role.
-
Veterans and their families transitioning into civilian work cultures.
-
Young Adults entering the workforce who want to ensure their career path aligns with their personal values.
